Build Your Own Website: Learning The Codes

by Tem Balanco

An adept knowledge of different programming languages, codes, and the program you will use to create a website are required if you want to build your own website. More flexibility in terms of designing your website is one advantage of creating your website from scratch. However, this takes a really long and complicated process. But if you're really into this, you will at least need knowledge and skill in HTML; an HTML editor; image editing software; and web hosting provider. There are four most commonly used programming languages used in creating websites. These are HTML, Javascript, Java, PHP, and CSS. With the rise of Web 2.0, Ruby on Rails, ASP.net, and Perl languages have also been developed.

The hypertext markup language or HTML, among the other languages, is the most commonly used language by programmers. Basically comprising all types of web pages are HTML codes. Physicist Tim Bernes Lee in 1980 developed this markup language to create a program that will allow the researchers to share and use documents within their company, CERN. Before it is transformed into a viewable webpage, HTML consists of hypertext and tags which are read by web browsers. Components such as attributes, character and entity references are featured by the programming language. Making it compatible with all other languages used to create websites, tech experts have modified the language through the years.

Web developers and programmers would probably recommend you to build your own website using the Javascript and the Java. Not only used to create web pages, the language also creates dynamic applications and programs. The scripting language is also a multi-paradigm language supporting advanced programming styles. Netscape's Brendan Eich was responsible for the introduction of the language. Used by client-server applications in the web, the Java programming language, meanwhile is most popularly used programming language nowadays. It was originally intended to provide an interactive television in 1995 by its developers James Gosling, Patrick Naughton, and Mike Sheridan. A Java-run program can be attuned with almost every platform. The language is used in graphics and networking.

The CSS, or the Cascading Style Sheets is another popular tool you can use to build your own website. It is a style language which is capable of formatting a document in markup language formats such as HTML, XHTML, and XML. It works simply by segregating the content from the layout. A webpage can be modified through CSS. Using a few keywords as syntax, CSS was developed by Robert Cailliau.

Moreover, the PHP or Hypertext Preprocessor is a scripting language mainly used for creating advanced and functional web pages. Designed as a standalone interpreter which works with almost all platforms and operating system, it was developed by Rasmus Ledorf. PHP is a free software.

It will take a lot of time and effort to learn even a single programming language. Nonetheless, using a website builder or hiring a web design expert is always preferred to make the most out of your time.

For you to build your own website, you will need the following: knowledge and skill in HTML; an HTML editor; image editing software; and web hosting provider. You won't be able to pursue a step forward unless you have a mastery of the basic programming languages such as HTML, Java, CSS, and PHP. Among the four, HTML serves as the base language.
